THOUGHTS FROM THE STUDIO
How does a painter operate ? He is someone who has decided to put great emphasis on a particular means of expression.
Does he mean to shut himself off in a colorful world. If he is sincere, I doubt it very much. He rather aims at harmonizing all visual information within his reach, with a view to organizing the world around him : the artist must try and add beauté wherever it’s missing .
What is the difference between an artist and a gardener then ? It lies in the fact that the artist will try and give something static and lifeless a certain movement in order to create the illusion of life. This life only appears in its biological concept when it conveys different interpretations, ebb and flow.
Painting does not have to be more figurative than abstract to be true ; true painting expands. But the advantage of figuration for an artist who tries to organize the environment is that it splits the painting into a vast number of small forms that will be never be alike. No symmetry, no equalities, no repetitions. Actually, figuration is only used for its entertaining dimension, so that doubt ma creep in. ; It makes the search for formal complementarily extremely difficult and implies first of all different levels of reading and then a desire for self correction, which is a good thing. One must try and find a style that will be inimitable and therefore genuinely artistic, because painting, like a relay race, develops thanks to or despite othe painters, and because of them.
Painting goes far beyond shapes and illustration and consequently fashion too. The artist kneads this paint endlessly until he reaches sincerity to show himself in his true colors. This paint against which he struggles the same way as others struggle against the elements makes him greater. I shall not paint in the 21st century as I did in the 20th because technology and marerials will change again. They alone enable us to date a work of art. The is not history of art, there are only stories of artists.
